The City of Five Flags

Pensacola is the county seat and only incorporated city in Escambia County, with 54,312 residents in the 2020 census and about 510,000 in the wider metro area (Wikipedia: Pensacola, Florida). Spanish settlers first tried to settle here in 1559, but a hurricane wrecked the colony; Spain returned in 1698. Spain, France, Britain, the United States and the Confederacy have all governed the city, which is where the "City of Five Flags" nickname comes from. Naval Air Station Pensacola, home of the Blue Angels, sits southwest of downtown.

Sewer or septic?

Within city limits, public sewer service in much of the area comes from the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (Emerald Coast Utilities Authority). Some older lots, homes at the city's edges and properties in the surrounding unincorporated county still rely on septic. If you are not sure, check the utility bill for a sewer charge or ask the utility. For city permits, start with the City of Pensacola (City of Pensacola); septic system permits themselves come through the state onsite sewage program.

Bay water and heavy rain

Low neighborhoods near the bay and bayous sit close to groundwater. The National Weather Service office covering the city (National Weather Service Mobile/Pensacola) documented the April 2014 flood and Hurricane Sally in 2020, both of which saturated the ground for days. Septic properties in low spots often see slow drains after big rains. The rain and high-water guide covers what to do.

Nearby

Ferry Pass borders the city to the north, Warrington lies to the southwest toward the Navy base, Gulf Breeze is across the Pensacola Bay Bridge and Cantonment is farther north along Highway 29.
